ver wondered what is the secret to all those beautiful homes in magazines and tv shows? And why the heck, no matter what you do to your home or how many DIY projects you tackle, it never looks even half as good?? It might have to do with the fact that they were decorated and designed by a professional Interior Designer, and the perfectly matched colours, and high end furniture, or… not!
Now, yes, hiring a professional designer can make a difference, but the real gap here, between their home and yours, is that theirs is absolutely perfectly clean and clutter free… All the decor items and appliances seem to be just in the right place, there are no piles of books anywhere threatening to fall over, no mess of papers on the corner of the table or cramming a drawer, messy bookshelves, closets stuffed with clothes, or towels on the floor or hanging from just about anywhere but the towel rack. You get the idea. Let me share with you 5 secrets to achieve that clutter free magazine-like home!
Some of these are taken from the book: The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing
1) Go on the one and only cleaning spree of your life!
Cleaning is fun (said no one ever) so get it out of the way by getting it done in one swoop. Take some before and after pictures cause you won’t believe the difference. Plus, doing all at once ensures you’re not stuck cleaning one corner at a time for days on end.
2) Clean by categories (clothes, books, momentos, etc) and not by area.
This one is super important and will make the cleaning process faster and easier! Start by gathering all of the clothes you own and sort through them, getting rid of anything you don’t use or don’t like anymore. Do the same with books, work things, letters, pictures, etc. before putting things away again.
3) Stage your Home.
Like you would see if a professional tv show or magazine. Give every single item it’s own place. If an item doesn’t have a specific place to be put away it will start cluttering your space again. Easy as that.
4) Make it Automatic.
Make it a habit to put back each item in it’s place after use. It will soon become automatic and will actually use up less of your time and effort then leaving it lying around.
Notice how good it feels to have everything clean and fresh. Just that feeling will make you want to keep it tidy. Take some after pictures!
Now that you know how to make that house of yours shine like those glossy magazine homes and pages, you can start tackling that next DIY project and know that it will look good since there’s no clutter to take away from it!
